The general depravity of humanity vs. the grace of God
This is something I’ve been thinking about a lot lately over the Thanksgiving/Christmas seasons. Humans really are pretty awful.
If you read the Bible, you’ll see how dumb people were. All Adam and Eve had to do to stay in paradise with a perfect relationship with God was not eat some fruit, but they did it and cursed us forever. Then mankind continually turns away from God and worships other things.
But even if you ignore the Bible and just look at the news, people are still dumb. We shoot each other, kidnap each other, bully each other. In my life, often I act like I want things in the world more than I want the One who created them, even though I know who he is.
It’s really a miracle God didn’t just kill mankind altogether, or at least make people like me miserable to pay for my mistakes. But what does he do instead?
He gives me family and friends who love me.
He gives me yummy coffee to drink in the morning and a job to pay for that coffee.
He gives me beautiful things to look at outside.
But besides all that and much much much more, he gives me salvation! And I don’t do a thing to merit it or earn it.
All I do is accept that I’m not good enough for God and Jesus’ death on the cross as a substitute for what I deserve, and God gives me his perfect standing before himself. And then I can draw near a holy God who really should just kill me when I dare talk to him.
It’s crazy. If I think about it too much, it blows my mind. But it’s a good thing to remember, especially at this time of year.
